Vee are the People: Meet Mor Cheayat
Matan Buganim
November 24, 2020

Mor Cheayat has found a way to feed her soul with smiles.

In the recent five years, she's been volunteering in Saleet's emergency apartment, cooking for women in the prostitution circle.

Read this inspiring interview about her dedicated volunteering activities and initiatives.

What brought you to volunteering?

"I was looking for a place to donate clothes and suggested going to Saleet's emergency apartment. I got there and met the House's Mother, and immediately a connection was made between us.

She asked if I would like to stay and volunteer from time to time, and I agreed, and since then, I am there."

What made you volunteer there?

"Because it felt to me that these women were less seen in our daily life. They are in a very difficult situation. They always need alcohol or drugs. It seemed to me like a situation I can face and become stronger from my giving there."

What are you doing there?

"I come to the apartment every Sunday. After checking with the House's Mother what meat and fish are in the freezer, she takes them out for thawing. Then I improvise cooking from the pantry and refrigerator and cook a quantity for two or three days."

Have you had any previous experience?

"Yes. 5 years ago, I worked in a famous French confectionery, which would throw away large amounts of desserts every day because of the chain's guidelines.

I asked my manager for permission and arrived one day with desserts at Ichilov Hospital, "Dana" Children's Hospital, and just walked around the wards. Slowly I got in touch with the doctors and the Head Nurse and was given permission to distribute desserts regularly.

I did this for two years. After the bakery closed, I began to independently conduct baking workshops for children in the oncology department.

And beyond that - my good friend is the founder of "Giving from the Heart" organization. On holidays: Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah, Purim, and Pesach, we arrive at the hospital and hand out toys and chocolates."

What are the challenges of being a volunteer?

"The sights. Small children in hospitals, in constant need of a respirator and with their hair fall out. And in the emergency apartment, I've often encountered the patients' convulsions or breakdowns. It's hard to see."

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

"The smiles. The smiles on the faces of the children as they decorate and eat the dessert and chocolates. And in the emergency apartment, when the girls really love the food and wait for it."

Tell about a special event that happened while volunteering.

"An event that happened recently.

One of the counselors in the emergency apartment sent me a video of a patient says how much she is waiting for Sunday night to taste my food and that it's delicious. It made me really happy."

What did you learn about yourself as a volunteer?

"Volunteering made me take things and events in my personal life in proportion. It made me appreciate life more.

I learned that I was stronger than I thought I was."
